Tell us a bit about how you came to join ASCOREL\u00ae\u2026<\/div>\n

I joined the company as part of a work-study programme leading to a BTS in SME and SMI Management Assistance. I was looking for a company near my home, and I found ASCOREL\u00ae<\/span><\/strong> in the Yellow Pages\u2026 Sorry, it\u2019s not very original! There weren\u2019t any vacancies at the time, but I sent an unsolicited application and they got back to me.<\/p>\n

What role were you offered?<\/p>\n

Working three days a week at the company, I was responsible for managing procurement: analysing the requirements entered into the ERP system (X3), placing orders with suppliers, following up with them to get a delivery date, and chasing them up again if the deadline was missed.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n

What were you doing before?<\/div>\n
\n

Before joining ASCOREL\u00ae<\/span><\/strong>, I worked as an administrative assistant and then as a dental assistant. I wanted to go back to school to change careers and move into the business world. Working with healthcare professionals and my role there didn\u2019t align with who I am. Dealing with patients wasn\u2019t easy either\u2014it just wasn\u2019t the right fit for me. I knew nothing about procurement, but now I\u2019ve found my calling\u2014sometimes fate works out just right.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Four years on, how has your role changed?<\/div>\n
\n

I completed my BTS, and ASCOREL\u00ae<\/span><\/strong> offered me a permanent contract following my apprenticeship.<\/p>\n

The Head of the Procurement Department introduced me to the procurement role, including the analytical side of things, which I took to straight away. Today, I still manage supplies, but I\u2019m also involved in some procurement work: I was really keen to learn about that side of things and to develop my career. My BTS was very broad-based, so I was keen to undertake further training to develop my skills, and my line managers were also keen to see me progress. I therefore undertook two training courses: \u2018Purchasing: Strategic Roles\u2019 and \u2018Advanced Training in Purchasing Negotiation\u2019.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

How important is the procurement function?<\/div>\n
\n

We may find ourselves working with all departments, so we\u2019re in a central position. Because to sell a product effectively, you need to buy it effectively; the groundwork must be done properly.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a whole strategy to put in place to manage what we buy. At the moment, we\u2019re facing a real supply issue with electronic components. This problem stems from the global market, which is saturated in terms of manufacturing capacity. We need to source stock from elsewhere and find alternative ways of doing things.<\/p>\n

I try to promote the purchasing department: we\u2019re regularly teased with comments that we do everything we can to \u2018buy cheaper\u2019 or \u2018drive down prices\u2019\u2026 Whereas our aim is to do our very best for ASCOREL\u00ae<\/span><\/strong>. Our role also involves building good relationships with suppliers and making the right decisions based on the information we have. What\u2019s true one time won\u2019t necessarily be true another time, or the following year: our job is one of constant adjustment.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

What other training courses have you done since you joined us?<\/div>\n
\n

I\u2019m currently on an English language course funded by the CPF, which is helping me build up my English skills. I use English every day, particularly in writing. I have one hour of English lessons a week; the aim is to improve my command of the language and feel more confident when dealing with suppliers and during negotiations.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also been able to complete a first-aid at work course! It\u2019s important in everyday life \u2013 not just at work \u2013 to know the right procedures. It\u2019s a course that will stand me in good stead for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Do the terms SERVICE, EXPERTISE, TEAMWORK and FRIENDLINESS resonate with you?<\/div>\n
\n

Yes, absolutely. In the purchasing department, we\u2019re here to SERVE<\/strong> just about everyone. Requests can come from anyone. We try to keep everyone happy.<\/p>\n

As for EXPERTISE<\/strong>, given that we\u2019re talking about technical matters, I don\u2019t have enough perspective or feedback to comment. It\u2019s mainly in the field that you can really gauge it.<\/p>\n

As for TEAMWORK<\/strong>: in procurement, we have to communicate with all departments, but also amongst ourselves. Communication is essential; we mustn\u2019t keep anything to ourselves. We therefore have to work as a team so that no information is lost.<\/p>\n

As for FRIENDLINESS<\/strong>, I find that ASCOREL\u00ae<\/span><\/strong> is a friendly company where you feel at ease. You don\u2019t turn up in the morning with a knot in your stomach thinking, \u2018Oh no, I\u2019m going to see my colleagues\u2019. We may have disagreements, but they get resolved and everything goes smoothly. The working relationships here are positive.<\/p>\n
